June gloom?

Turn those frowns upside, people: Our “May gray” weather will give way to summerlike temperatures for this first week of June, forecasters say.

While summer officially begins June 20, the sun is showing up early.

“High temperatures in the city are forecast to slowly rise from the middle 70s F [Fahrenheit] at the middle of the week to the middle 80s F by Friday,” says private forecaster AccuWeather.

The National Weather Service said in a statement that a high-pressure system “will move directly overhead by Wednesday.” That could push the cool, coastal clouds away and keep things sunny.

The high was expected to produce temperatures in the low to mid 90s in deserts and high deserts “and mainly 80s elsewhere” inland, the NWS states.

Today's high temps are expected to reach the mid-70s in the L.A. Basin, but by Thursday and Friday they'll reach 80 and then the mid 80s, respectively, forecasters said.

At the same time, if you're thinking of taking some time off during the short work week, be aware that a south swell will be producing waves as high as 7 feet at local beaches Wednesday and Thursday, the NWS said in a “beach hazards” statement.

“A long period south swell generated from a storm complex in the Southern Hemisphere will move into the coastal waters by Wednesday morning, lasting through Thursday evening,” the service states. “The swell is expected to generate waves of 4 to 6 feet with local sets to 7 feet, which will likely produce strong and dangerous rip currents and long-shore currents. Swim near lifeguards.”

It seems like this is the first serious south swell of the summer season, when the biggest waves usually come from that direction.

The Pacific, however, will continue to fight for gloomy days, even as inland areas heat up, forecasters said.

“The only exception to the sunny days will be some low clouds near the coast during the morning hours,” states AccuWeather.

UPDATE at 4:02 p.m. Wednesday, June 1: The National Weather Service issued an “excessive heat warning” for inland areas of Southern California, including the Inland Empire and the high deserts.

“The peak of the heat is expected Friday and Saturday, with widespread highs in the 90s and 100s across interior areas,” the NWS said in a statement. “This extended heat event will bring an increased risk of heat-related illness as well as elevated fire danger across interior areas. Now is the time to ensure that cooling systems are functioning. It is also important to remember to drink plenty of water and schedule any heavy outdoor work during the coolest part of the day. “

Los Angeles and Ventura County valleys could see temperatures into the 90s by week's end, the NWS said.
