If you were looking forward to frolicking with your dog in 20 tons of snow, you're out of luck.

Unleashed by Petco had planned to dump the white stuff outside Santa Monica Place Saturday as part of its Summer Snow Day in cities across America.

But then the drought happened, along with the bad press that has accompanied other recreational uses of water, namely the downtown Slide the City “slip 'n' slide” event that has been met with a save-the-H20 petition from opponents:

People are sensitive about water these days, even if it's frozen, fluffy and made for Fido.

Unleashed by Petco had planned an off-leash dog park, pet adoptions, and expert demonstrations on animal care as part of the snow day. It was to happen from 9 a.m. Saturday “until the snow melts.”

Now, not so much. The retailer announced this week that it has canceled its events in Santa Monica and San Diego. According to a statement:

… The company has decided that canceling the Los Angeles and San Diego events was the right thing to do. More than 80 percent of California is in extreme drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Both the Los Angeles and San Diego events have been in the works since last year, but out of concern for the environment and water conservation efforts statewide, the decision was ultimately made to halt the 2014 events.

However: If you can afford the plane ticket and were really looking forward this summer snow thing, the party's still on in New York, Boston and Washington, D.C. Just avoid the yellow stuff.
