Much ink (many pixels?) has been spilled on West Coast Sound about 2009's “Timeless” series, where Mochilla and Vtech presented stellar performances by The Suite for Ma Dukes orchestra (who covered the late great J. Dilla), Ethiojazz king Mulatu Astatke, and Arthur Verocai. For anyone who caught these shows, the experience was marked not by a sense of excitement, but of awe. They were not just performances, they were distinct moments, unrepeatable slices of history.

But in March, Mochilla will try to bottle the lighting, by dropping a limited edition box set DVD of the series, with extra behind the scenes footage, poster, exclusive music. If the cover of the box set looks familiar, it's ripped straight from those original posters wrapped around light poles and plastered to walls (a.k.a., the analog Twitter). Today we give you a first look at a clip from the DVD– mastered by Grammy award-winning producer/mixer Bob Power, best known for his work with De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, D'Angelo, Badu–it looks and sounds amazing.

But seeing is believing.

After the jump, witness Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and the Suite for Ma Dukes orchestra in their version of “Take Notice” from J Dilla's Ruff Draft EP and download a FREE MP3 of the performance.

Here's the original version, with a note from Stonesthrow:

This track was recorded in 2003, but was released only as a snippet on the original single LP version of Ruff Draft because of time constraints. When Stones Throw reissued Ruff Draft in 2007, they went back to the master tapes and found this full-length version of the song, plus “Wild” and alternate versions of the Ruff Draft intro & outro. J Dilla introduced Guilty Simpson to Stones Throw by saying, “You should sign him.” He was signed.
