Despite Black cultural influence on fashion and some true talents making their mark in the field, biases still exist within the industry. This problem will be explored via a free virtual discussion presented by the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising titled Amplifying Melanated Voices: A Conversation with Black Designers. The presentation will feature FIDM faculty, alumni and students in a discussion panel seeking solutions to the inequality that persists on the creative end, in hiring, in education and on the branding and marketing side.  Panelists include: TJ Walker (co-Founder of The Black Design Collective and Cross Colours, and a FIDM instructor), Octavius Terry (celebrity designer and creator of GROOM luxury menswear), Devert Hickman (recipient of the inaugural Black Design Collective Scholarship at FIDM) and Illeana Guzman (FIDM Fashion Design Student and managing editor of FIDM Mode Magazine).  Assistant Chairperson of Fashion Design at FIDM, Jonie Thomas, hosts as each panelist’s work is covered. Thurs., July 23, 5 p.m. PST. Click here for Zoom meeting.
