Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley tells LA Weekly he'll likely announce his official candidacy for the state Attorney General's office in early January. The Republican will likely be running against the man who used to be the Los Angeles City Attorney hold his office, Democrat Rocky Delgadillo.

“I really want to formally do this after the holidays are over,” Cooley said. ” So in the second week of January it will be on the budget.”

Cooley “has had a lot of support from Democrats in the district attorney's races,” Robert Philibosian, a former D.A., told the Metropolitan News-Enterprise. He “would transcend any party designation,” he said.

Current A.G. Jerry Brown is running for governor.
