FBI special agent Stephen Ivans went off the reservation, gun in-hand, prompting a massive search for him in the Verdugo Mountains east of Burbank over the weekend.

Authorities fear he's suicidal.

What's more he's an avid hiker who knows the area well.

According to a statement from the Burbank police, he was reported missing Friday morning:

… The 35-year-old male is despondent and possibly suicidal. Information indicates he left his residence on foot and may be in the area of the Verdugo Mountains.

There is a handgun unaccounted for from inside his residence. There is no indication he is or has been involved in any criminal activity. The police department is concerned for his well-being.

Ivans left on foot from his Burbank home in the 1700 block of Scott Road, according to cops.

He's described as 6 feet, 160 pounds, with brown eyes and receding brown hair. He wears glasses. Ivans is a former LAPD officer.

Associated Press reported that as many as 100 FBI agents, 40 sheriff's deputies and a dozen area cops looked for him in the rugged terrain of the Verdugos on Sunday to no avail.

If you've seen him call Burbank police at 818-238-3000.
