This just in from Entravision:

“We've made the very difficult decision to cease broadcasting Indie 103.1 over the air. Instead, Indie 103.1 can be heard online on the station's website: www.indie1031.com. A range of factors contributed to this decision, including changes in the radio industry's methods of measuring listener audiences that make it difficult to continue broadcasting innovative formats like Indie 103.1 in the current marketplace. Moving forward, Entravision will continue to stay focused on our core business of Spanish-language radio, television and digital media.”

Entravision continues to own and program the station, but the company has no additional details at this time.”

I just swung by Indie's offices to see if I could talk with someone about the closure, but the receptionist wouldn't call anyone to come up. Word from Twitter feeds is that employees are boxing up their belongings. When I asked Entravision's spokesperson about whether all the Indie employees had been laid off, she gave a pregnant pause and declined to comment. But employees boxing up their belongings is a pretty good indicator of what's happening.

Tedd Roman is Twittering his layoff here.

Word is that Indie 103.1 will become something called El Gato 103.1. Whatever El Gato is, one thing's for certain: when that format fails you're not going have listeners crying and declaring the Death of Radio the way they are today. Bummer move, though not unexpected. The station's fans may have been diehards, but if the advertising revenue would have been pouring in, Entravision wouldn't be doing this.
