What’s not to love about the Greek Theater (unless you happen to live in
the Los Feliz hills next to it)? With consistent sound and a multitude of excellent
vantage points, this little arena, which underwent a multimillion-dollar revamp
last year, is still the under-the-stars space to see your favorite band
— not to mention to enjoy L.A.’s superlative warm summer nights (show season runs
from May through October). Ever since we saw our first real concert (Sparks) here
back in the mid-’80s it’s been a fave, and when we got older it was the best spot
in town to sneak a freebie show — if we were willing to endure a slightly strenuous
hike through the trees behind the place. We hear the “tree people,” as they’ve
been called, are still around and having a grand ol’ time during James Brown or
White Stripes shows, but we’re much too lazy to join them these days. Even the
venue’s hospitality/VIP area, if you’re lucky enough to get into it, has a history
and a welcoming consistency: posters of past performers peering from the walls,
the ever-present food spread, which hasn’t veered from the meatballs/chicken-wings/cheese-plate
assortment the place has been serving for years, and the woodsy outdoor bar, the
perfect place to relax still-ringing ears and wait out the traffic — not that
it’s really necessary. If you can stand the stacked parking, the drive down the
hill is painless compared to the usual post-concert caravan jam. 2700
