Staples Center is one of the largest entertainment venues in Los Angeles, and as the city gets closer to Phase 4 of reopening, the arena is seeking accreditation on COVID-19 cleaning protocols.

Phase 4 of the “Roadmap to Recovery” affects all entertainment venues where large groups gather, and are considered to be “highest risk.”

On May 7, the Global Biorisk Advisory Council, a division of the ISSA cleaning association, introduced a “GBAC Star” accreditation which was created for facilities in response to COVID-19.

The accreditation means that Staples Center would meet GBAC’s standards for cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention. GBAC also has commitments from multiple entertainment venues around the U.S., most notably from the San Diego Convention Center and Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

“Now is the time for businesses of every size to be transparent about the measures they’re taking to protect customers and employees, including proper cleaning and disinfection,” ISSA executive director John Barrett said. “GBAC STAR program participants demonstrate their commitment to going the extra mile by implementing prevention and response best practices that support health and safety.”

The NBA tentatively plans to resume its season July 31, as commissioner Adam Silver has made the league’s Board of Governors aware of those plans, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

California has not yet committed to a Phase 4 reopening timetable, making it unclear whether events would be able to take place at Staples Center, despite the NBA’s season plans.
