Japan-born and CalArts-trained, Kenji Yamaguchi has been a longtime fixture on the local dance scene, his virtuosity most often showcased by choreographers Frit and Frat Fuller. More recently, Yamaguchi has emerged as an arresting choreographer in his own right. At the respected Palm Desert choreography festival last November, the duet Asura was a standout both for its evocative choreography exploring ideas of loss and reunion and for Yamaguchi’s astonishing performances with Kana Miyamoto. For his “Spirited Astray” concerts, Yamaguchi has assembled a company of 20 dancers to showcase his danceworks, including another look at Asura, along with contributions from the Fullers and Rino. Friday’s low-priced, abbreviated preview features only selected numbers. El Portal Theater, 5269 Lankershim Blvd., N. Hlywd.; Fri.-Sat., April 13-14, 8 p.m.; Sun., April 15, 2 p.m.; $10 Fri., $23 Sat.-Sun. ($20 in advance from Hamas Dance Center or Millennium Dance Complex). kenjispiritedastray@yahoo.com.
