Los Angeles might be the pot shop capital of America, but Southern Californians appear to be sinking Prop. 19, the California ballot initiative that aims to fully legalize marijuana.

The latest Field Poll shows that the measure has strong support in the Bay Area (49 percent) and Northern California (50 percent) but is losing in the state's population center, SoCal.

The no side is leading in Los Angeles County 51 percent to 38 percent. In the rest of Southern California it's 50 percent opposed to 41 percent in favor.

In fact 19 is losing momentum overall, according to Sunday's poll (PDF), with prospective no votes outweighing supporters 49 to 42 percent. That's a U-turn from mid-September, when the legalization effort was leading 49 percent to 42 percent.

What's happening here in SoCal? Are pot shops and their customers content with the status quo? Is the south side of the Golden State simply more conservative than the north?

Here's one way to slice it: Voters under 40 would pass the thing, 54 percent (in favor) to 38 percent (opposed). But voters under 40 don't run things. In fact, the opposite is true. Unless we see a historic turnout of young people Tuesday, this thing is baked.
