Esteban Nunez, the son of former California Assembly speaker Fabian Nunez, and his Sacramento buddy Ryan Jett were sentenced today to 16 years in prison in the fatal stabbing death of San Diego college student in the fall of 2008.

Last month, Nunez, 21, and his friend 24-year-old Jett pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, in exchange for a murder charge being dropped. The pair had been charged with murder after allegedly confronting Santos following a drunken frat-party outing. Santos had a knife stabbed into the left ventricle of his heart and was left to die in a pool of blood. Two other defendants, Rafael Garcia and Leshanor Thomas, already made plea deals. They will be sentenced later this afternoon.

After the plea agreement was announced last month and the duo was taken away by bailiffs Nunez's mother initially refused to leave and cried, “I love you son.”
