Cue the banjo music.

A 28-year-old high school teacher from Southern California was arrested this week on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor after she had a one-year relationship with a 16-year-old student and subsequently gave birth last month to his child:

That, at least, is what the Redlands Police Department is alleging.

Cops say they arrested teacher Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst at 8:45 p.m. Monday after investigating allegations brought to them by the boy's mother.

She's a teacher at Citrus Valley High School in Redlands and served as an adviser to the victim, now 17, police said.

Whitehurst gave birth to a child June 18, and police say that the victim is the father. Wow. Where's Jerry Springer when you need him?

Whitehurst was booked and released after she posted $25,000 bail, cops say.

They're still investigating and hope anyone who might have information about the teacher will come forward and talk to detectives: 909-798-7681.
