Six people died when a Greyhound bus en route to Sacramento from Los Angeles crashed into an SUV in Fresno Thursday, authorities said. The dead included the bus driver, two of the bus' passengers and three people in the SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision on northbound State Route 99 near McKinley Avenue was reported at 2:15 a.m., said CHP Officer Kirk Arnold. At least four passengers suffered critical injuries, he said. Several others were treated for moderate injuries. There were 47 people on the bus.

The SUV apparently overturned and ended up in the bus' path: The bus careened into a center divider and hit another vehicle before diving down a 15-foot slope and wrapping around a eucalyptus tree.

Images from the scene indicated that the front end of the bus had been completely sheared off.

The dead bus driver was identified as James Jewett, 57, of Sacramento,

Family members worried that loved ones might have been on the bus can contact Greyhound: 800-972-4583.
