Major Multi-Car Collision on Highway 101

MONTECITO, CA (October 14, 2021)  Six vehicles involved in a multi-car accident on Highway 101 near Montecito early Sunday morning.

The first collision occurred at 7:20 a.m. in a work zone on the southbound side south of Sheffield Drive.

According to CHP, a gray Honda Pilot going in the #1 lane at an unknown speed went abruptly slow then a gray Honda Accent was following it at 65 mph, unable to stop in time, rear-ended the Pilot.

Shortly later, a second identical collision involving four automobiles happened in the same area.

Officers said the cause of the multi-car crash remain unknown but the majority of drivers in both crashes stated that the low, glaring sun was a role.

Meanwhile, responding medics rendered aid to three drivers with minor injuries on the scene.

Additionally, authorities closed many lanes of the roadway for cleaning, but it reopened about 10 a.m.

An active investigation is underway for the accident on Highway 101.
