. J.Lauryn’s newest single marks a new direction for the Grammy Award-winning artist, whose songwriting contributions for the likes of Post Malone and BTS have helped her amass over 3 billion streams across all platforms.
J.Lauryn’s solo career is set to take off in 2024, with the Hawaii-born songwriter having shared her killer new single ‘Who The Man’.
For those who don’t know J.Lauryn, there’s little doubt you’ll have encountered her music at some stage. Hailing from a small Hawaiian town called Kailua, J.Lauryn rose to prominence after landing a placement writing for Ziggy Marley’s 2016 self-titled album. The album in question won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album; it cemented her reputation in the music industry and served as the first of several Grammy nominations she’d picked up throughout her career.
Having teamed up with numerous artists and worked tirelessly to perfect her songwriting craft, the artist co-wrote ‘Goodbyes’, by Post Malone and Young Thug. This was her first hit single, with the track debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts.
Post Malone’s album, Hollywood’s Bleeding, also became the highest-selling album in 2019, meaning that J.Lauryn rapidly became an in-demand songwriter globally. As if to certify her international status, in 2020, J.Lauryn landed a placement working on BTS’s Map of The Soul 7 (which broke records for being the highest pre-ordered album of all time). She co-wrote BTS’s song ‘00:00 Zero O’clock’, bringing her to worldwide attention.
At every turn throughout her career, J.Lauryn has won praise for helping major artists find their sound and voice with her writing collaborations. This is why she also counts the likes of DJ Snake, Ozuna, Megan Thee Stallion, Blackpink, and Ty Dolla Sign as some of the other names she has worked with in the years that followed her placement with BTS.
But in recent years, J.Lauryn has renewed her focus on her music. As a solo artist, J.Lauryn has been called a “rhythmic-reggae” musician, and her songs – including her recent singles – offer an exhilarating crossover of hip-hop, R&B, reggae, and pop.
‘Who The Man’ was shared with the world in early January. The track sees J.Lauryn in her most energetic form ever. For an artist credited with writing some seriously emotive songs in the studio, on ‘Who The Man,’ she reminds you that she’s also gifted with a formidably fast rap flow. The song opens with a groovy guitar riff before J.Lauryn hops on the mic. “I’m ‘bout to jam out,” she sings in her booming, deep tone – and she spends the next 2 minutes and 13 seconds doing precisely that. Lyrically, she drops confident, brash bars about her meteoric rise to the music industry’s top.
This impressive track is the 3rd single from J.Lauryn’s long-awaited second album, which will be released in 2024.
