Over 25 years, Grand Performances has provided a musical memory box, with sounds from every cultural continent coursing over the California Plaza watercourt, around the skyscrapers, and through our hips and hearts. Some of the best grooves and most outrageously entertaining evenings have originated from artists who call L.A. home: mnemonic highlights include Ozomatli's notorious near-riot of joy, when hundreds of fans splashed and boogied in the perilously shallow pool that separates stage from crowd, as well as the triumphant Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra throwing down its exponentially funky big band globo-jazz symphonies on multiple occasions. GP kicks off its silver anniversary summer with the aptly named “One Night, One World, One Stage” fundraiser and concert, offering a sixer of local talent, some of which have been performing as part of the outdoor program from the git-go. The Nicholson Pipe and Drum Corps' brawny Scottish bellow and the thunderous thump of the Kinnara Taiko drummers get things going, followed by MC Rai's North African sonic bazaar, Ciro Hurtado's Peruvian-infused classical guitar, and the late great Francisco Aquabella's Latin Jazz Ensemble channeling the spirit of the master conguero. Capping the evening off, after the picnic dinners and fruit of the vine have been consumed, Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca will impart their requisite Afro-Latin clave-infused dance-craziness. With public arts programming on ever-shakier financial ground, GP's quarter-century of quality is certainly worth celebrating. Grand Performances, California Plaza,300-350 S.
