Plenty of sequels fail to live up to the originals, some so much so that they are reviled in comparison. And then there's 1990's Troll 2, which actually has absolutely nothing to do with 1986's Troll (which wasn't particularly good, either), yet was retitled from Goblins for U.S. distribution in order to try to sell it. Little, it turns out, could have possibly guaranteed decent box office for Troll 2, which has since attained cult status for its utterly pervasive badness. In fact, the stinker has garnered such a following that Michael Stephenson — the actor who played the film's young lead — directed a documentary on the phenomenon, titled Best Worst Movie, which debuted last year to significant acclaim at several film festivals. Stephenson stops by the New Beverly Cinema this week for two nights of double-feature action, with his doc, followed by the brain-melting turkey that inspired it all; a Q&A will take place between films.
