Simon Trp?eski knows his way around the florid works of Sergei Rachmaninoff, having already released two albums by the Russian composer. Tonight, the Macedonian pianist unravels Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, which inverts Niccolò Paganini's violin melodies, particularly on the overtly lovely 18th variation. Guest conductor James Gaffigan leads the L.A. Phil, bookending Rachmaninoff with Sergei Prokofiev's Third Symphony and Leonard Bernstein's suite from the film On the Waterfront. Bernstein's score is alternately soothing, lyrical and stirringly dramatic.
