A Silver Lake death originally believed to be a suicide is now being investigated as a possible homicide, police said.

After officers were called to Manzanita Street near Sunset Boulevard about 7:11 p.m. Tuesday based on reports of a shooting, a man's body was found with a gun nearby, said Los Angeles police Officer Karen Rayner. The man had suffered a wound to the head, and a semiautomatic handgun was spotted about 15 feet away. However, it was initially determined that the victim's head wound did not come from a gunshot.

“We have a mystery,” said Los Angeles police Sgt. Sanford Rosenberg. “It will be up to

the coroner to decide if this was a murder.”

One detective wondered if maybe the man was felled by a hit-and-run driver. Anyone with information on the man's death to call police at (213) 485-2563
