Sibling rivalries have been a compelling part of the sports world for ages, as it gives athletes and spectators a unique twist on the competition. The rivalries can be motivators for the siblings, pushing them to outperform one another. A YouGov poll conducted in February 2023 found that nearly half of Americans with at least one sibling (46 percent) reported experiencing rivalries during their upbringing.
In the high-profile world of Formula 1 (F1), sibling rivalries have added an extra layer of intrigue to the sport’s rich history. Well-known examples include Michael and Ralf Schumacher, who both competed in F1 during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Michael, the elder brother, secured seven World Championship titles, while Ralf achieved six Grand Prix victories.
Beyond sibling rivalries, F1 has witnessed intense intra-team competitions that mirror the fervor of sibling dynamics. The rivalry between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost at McLaren during the late 1980s is a prime example. Their fierce competition included on-track clashes and differing personalities, and it is known to be one of the sport’s most storied rivalries.
Emerging talents continue to showcase the impact of sibling dynamics in racing. Cash and Roman Felber, 14-year-old twin brothers from Cleveland, show how a sibling rivalry can be mutually beneficial. Their journey began at age eight, driving Segway Karts in their driveway, and their passion grew after attending the Austin Grand Prix in 2022.
“Racing at our level is pretty competitive—like, if you’re one-tenth off, you could be like fifth place,” explains Roman. “There are like 25 other drivers that you have to try to beat, so it’s competitive, with the top 5 being the most competitive,” Cash adds.
In November 2023, they made their Formula 4 debut at the US JSF4 Junior Race at Circuit of The Americas, where Cash secured two first-place finishes and Roman achieved two second-place finishes. They have since competed in top karting series like SKUSA KA100JR and USPKS KA100JR, while undergoing extensive Formula 4 testing and races across U.S. tracks.
Training under FLBR Motorsport the twins continuously push each other to improve, often finishing within fractions of a second apart. Their rigorous training includes physical conditioning, reaction drills, and simulator sessions, all of which help them refine their racecraft. “I stretch before I go out. I also do reaction stuff and run through my pre-race mental checklist from Enzo Mucci, my coach,” says Roman. Cash, on the other hand, places emphasis on his training sessions to be prepared when he gets on the track.
As for their racing idols, Roman dreams of competing against Max Verstappen due to his “great” and “aggressive” driving skills, while Cash says he would love to race Lewis Hamilton because he is the GOAT. Their respect for the sport’s legends speaks to their dedication and desire to learn from the best.
The Felber twins’ story shows the duality of sibling rivalry in the sports world. While competition between siblings can lead to tension, it often creates a fun, exciting environment for everyone involved. As they continue their ascent in the racing world, Cash and Roman show everyone how sibling rivalry, when channeled constructively, can be a powerful force toward greatness.
