The Jewish sheriff's deputy who documented Mel Gibson's alleged, antisemitic comments following the actor's 2006 DUI arrest in Malibu is suing his department, claiming that he has been passed over for promotions because he told the truth via an arrest report.

Deputy James Mee claims emotional distress, medical costs and mental suffering but his suit has not specified how much cash he would seek, according to the Associated Press. Mee says that he was discouraged from reporting Gibson's remarks, which were later leaked to TMZ. As a result he says he was transferred and later passed over for promotions to the positions of traffic investigator and motorcycle deputy.

“The whole story is not being told in this lawsuit and we look forward to telling it,” sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said in response to the suit. “It has nothing to do with religious discrimination. We categorically deny those allegations.”

Mee was the the tarket of an investigation into the leaking of Gibson's comments, but the District Attorney's office ultimately declined to file charges.

The lawsuit also claims a sheriff's official erased a videotape taken of Gibson while he was being detained.

Mee, 55, noted on his report that Gibson allegedly said, “F*****g Jews… The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world … Are you a Jew?”
