Could Shanghai No. 1 Seafood Village be the most opulent Chinese restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley? Inside this Shanghai-style banquet hall, the walls are lined with red velvet and the ceilings hung with ornate chandeliers. You probably wouldn't be surprised if the restaurant started hosting murder-mystery dinners on weekends. The full-color, oversized menu is larger than most Broadway handbills, and a piece of artwork in itself. For dinner, try the shimmering cubes of “Old Alley” pork belly served in clay pots, pan-fried sesame buns filled with fatty broth, sweet braised eggplant, or whole Dungeness crab fried with mounds of chili and garlic. In the mornings and early afternoons, the focus turns to elevated Cantonese-style dim sum — delicate shrimp dumplings, baked pork buns and sizzling stone pot–fried rice. 250 W.
