Friday marks the opening night of Dance Camera West, the 13th annual dance media film festival, with a free live performance at 7:30 p.m. followed by a block of international short films starting at 8 p.m. for $5. Both take place at the Music Center. The lineup includes The Fragile Balance from England, about the Royal Ballet's youngest ever principal ballet dancer, and Today's the Day from the United States, about an intern who finds the courage to follow his dreams. The filmmakers will be on hand for a Q&A afterward. The L.A. International Student Film Festival comes to Regal Cinemas' L.A. Live for four hours of primarily short films by high school, undergrad and graduate students from around the world. There will be four programs total – two from 4 to 6 p.m. and then two from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Since the blocks of films overlap, you'll have to choose wisely. A sampling of the night's programs includes Wanda, a stop-motion tale of a lipstick who wants a baby; The Kid in the Closet, about how China's one-child policy causes a family to hide the existence of their young son; Bully, an AFI thesis film that follows a bullied kid, Toby, as he deals with the fallout when a video of him being humiliated at school gets uploaded online; and Searcy County, a doc about the livestock auction that takes place in rural Arkansas. Thursday, June 12
If the great bard of Avon could live forever – not just in literature – he would be 450 years old this year. To celebrate the anniversary of Shakespeare's birth, the Aero and the Egyptian will be screening four Shakespeare films and filmed performances. First, on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Aero Theatre, is the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey in the titular roles. All attendees of this screening have a chance to win passes to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in July to see the National Ballet of Canada's Romeo and Juliet. Also included in this series are Henry IV, Part 1, from the Royal Shakespeare Company; The Tempest from the 2010 Stratford Shakespeare Festival; and Richard II from the BBC's 2012 The Hollow Crown series.
