Santa Barbara County Fire Department said the incident happened just before 8:00 p.m., near Highway 154.

For reasons unknown, a driver was heading south in the northbound lanes. As a result, the wrong-way vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming northbound Toyota.

Upon impact, the wrong-way driver became disabled and blocked the first northbound lane. In addition, the crash caused diesel fuel to spill out onto the road causing approximately 30 gallons to leak onto the median.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota had to be extracted by fire personnel and airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries.

Following preliminary investigations, alcohol and/or drug intoxication was a factor in the wrong-way crash on Highway 101. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was placed into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence.

One small driving mistake can easily lead to a car accident. This is why it is important to drive defensively and always abide by all driving laws. Keep your attention on the road, follow the speed limit, and never drive under the influence of altering substances.
