Multiple Injuries Reported after DUI Accident near Highway 154

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY, CA (March 24, 2022) – Tuesday night, several people sustained injuries following a wrong-way crash on Highway 101.

Santa Barbara County Fire Department said the incident happened just before 8:00 p.m., near Highway 154.

For reasons unknown, a driver was heading south in the northbound lanes. As a result, the wrong-way vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming northbound Toyota.

Upon impact, the wrong-way driver became disabled and blocked the first northbound lane. In addition, the crash caused diesel fuel to spill out onto the road causing approximately 30 gallons to leak onto the median.

Both occupants inside the wrong-way vehicle were able to get out of the car on their own. Paramedics transported one victim to Marian Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota had to be extracted by fire personnel and airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries.

Following preliminary investigations, alcohol and/or drug intoxication was a factor in the wrong-way crash on Highway 101. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was placed into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence.
