29-Year-Old Man Killed in Big-Rig Crash near Pelandale Avenue

MODESTO, CA (April 5, 2022) – Tuesday morning, Sergio Zuniga and Emily Dias were the drivers involved in a fatal accident on Highway 99.

Around 6:50 a.m., the collision took place on the northbound lanes of the freeway near Pelandale Avenue.

According to reports, the driver of a Scion was heading north in the fast lane, while a motorcyclist was heading north in the next right lane. Under unknown circumstances, the Scion and the motorcycle collided.

Upon impact, the motorcyclist was thrown from the vehicle into the slow lane, where he was run over by a large truck. The rider, only described as a 29-year-old Hughson man, died at the scene.

Meanwhile, the driver of the big-rig, 65-year-old Zuniga, of Merced, veered to the right and hit the brake in attempt to avoid a collision, but failed to avoid hitting the motorcyclist.

Everyone involved was wearing safety equipment, and neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the collision. Further factors leading up to the collision are still under investigation.
