Jimmy Williams & Susan Heeger, authors of the home-gardening manual and cookbook From Seed to Skillet: A Guide to Growing, Tending, Harvesting, and Cooking Up Fresh Healthy Food to Share with People You Love, would certainly argue that in that case your own supply is the best kind.
On Saturday, February 26th at the LA County Arboretum in Arcadia, they'll talk about how you too can plant, tend to, then pick and prepare tasty vegetables in your own garden; unfortunately, you'll have to look someplace else for tips on writing a clean, succinct title for your book.
The talk begins at 11:30 a.m., which leads into a 12:30 book signing and a 12:45 optional box lunch. Tickets are $25 for the general public and $20 for Arboretum or Garden Conservancy members, and lunch is an extra $20 no matter who you are. That box gets you a meal based on some recipes from the book, by the poorly named but well-regarded caterer Kitchen for Exploring Foods.
Not a bad view to enjoy during lunch
The LA County Arboretum itself is a sprawling botanical garden in Arcadia, featuring tons of rare plants, a waterfall, some sculptures, and a handful of historic buildings. Best of all, the mall and the race track are just down the street, so gambling away your savings and then picking up a present to apologize to your family is only a short walk from where you will already be parked.
