The connection between Bowie and Basquiat has previously been established on film in Julian Schnabel’s 1996 film Basquiat, in which Bowie played the role of the young artist’s mentor and collaborator, Andy Warhol. It is clear that Bowie felt a strong connection to the artist and his method: “It comes as no surprise to learn that he [Basquiat] had a not-so-hidden ambition to be a rock musician,” Bowie wrote in Modern Painters in 1996. “His work relates to rock in ways that very few other visual artists get near. He seemed to digest the frenetic flow of passing image and experience, put them through some kind of internal reorganization and dress the canvas with this resultant network of chance.”

In London in November, Sotheby's will auction off around 400 art and design objects from the personal collection of David Bowie, who died in January. The chameleonic, charismatic musician-actor left behind an impressive array of modern art, particularly by 20th-century Brits. Damien Hirst, Graham Sutherland and sculptor Henry Moore are all represented, as are Jean-Michel Basquiat and Marcel Duchamp. Bowie's personal stereo, a Brionvega Radiophonograph, also will be offered for sale and is on display.

Prior to the auction, the collection is touring the United States. Its first stop is Sotheby's Los Angeles, where it can be viewed by the public on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 20 and 21. Here's an exclusive first look at what will be on display at Sotheby's next week.
