Talk about your international intrigue! As the final event in its 2011 Sunset Concerts season, the Skirball Cultural Center presents Jorge Villarreal. What, that doesn't ring a bell? Perhaps you would recognize his nom de accordion, Mr. Vallenato. He's a Mexican-American from Edinburg, Texas, who plays Colombian cumbia and vallenato music on the accordion. Vallenato is the roots music of Colombia, and Villarreal fell in love with it at the tender age of 12. At 17, he won first place in the Diatonic Accordion Professional Category at the Czech Festival in Houston. See why he's been called “the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion.”
