Sixty years later, the heartbreaking moral within A Star Is Born, a cautionary tale about the rise and fall of fame, still rings true. Hear, for the first time or once again, Judy Garland’s powerful rendition of “The Man That Got Away” in her role as up-and-comer Esther Blodgett, who is discovered by alcoholic movie star Norman Maine (James Mason). James Duke Mason, James Mason’s grandson, will introduce the film. Author Randy Schmidt also will be in attendance to sign copies of his new book, Judy Garland on Judy Garland: Interviews and Encounters, starting at 6:30 p.m. The screening starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Aero Theatre.

Meanwhile, at Cinefamily, series The Hubleys: A Centennial Celebration will have its first program of shorts on Friday at 7:30 p.m. It honors John and Faith Hubley, animators who founded the independent studio Storyboard Studios and collaborated on more than 20 short films. The series will continue through the weekend. Emily and Georgia Hubley will appear in person. More details at cinefamily.org.

Saturday, Sept. 27

Before the long-running television series, there was M*A*S*H, the movie, starring Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Robert Duvall and many more in this dark comedy of medical personnel during the Korean War. After the 7:30 p.m. screening, Gould, Sally Kellerman and Bud Cort will participate in a Q&A on the Alex Theatre stage. Info at alextheatre.org.

Monday, Sept. 29

If you want to see upcoming documentary Waiting for August for free before its Oct. 3 theatrical release, here’s your chance. USC will be showing Teodora Ana Mihai’s doc about 15-year-old Georgiana of Romania, who must raise her six siblings when her mother goes to work abroad. The screening will begin at 7 p.m. in the Ron Howard Screening Room, followed by a Q&A with the director. RSVP at cinema.usc.edu/events/event.cfm?id=14502 for first-come, first-served seating.

Tuesday, Sept. 30

This fall, Fox will premiere the 10-episode mystery event series Gracepoint. Get a free sneak preview of the first two episodes at LACMA’s Bing Theater tonight at 7:30 p.m. The series stars David Tennant and Anna Gunn as cops who must solve the murder of a young boy in the small town of Gracepoint. After the screening, stick around for a conversation with actors Gunn, Nick Nolte, Jacki Weaver, Michael Peña, Virginia Kull, Kevin Rankin and Jessica Lucas as well as executive producers Chris Chibnall, Anya Epstein and Dan Futterman. Advance tickets are no longer available, but a standby line will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Hammer Building ticket office.
