As medical marijuana becomes part of the fabric of life in California it probably comes as no surprise that a school, Oaksterdam University, is cashing in on interest in the Golden State's biggest cash crop.

At the Los Angeles campus, near the Beverly Center, students are learning about the business of medical marijuana, including intricacies of the law, the science of growing weed, and how to lobby local politicians (L.A. is a case study for that). This according to a feature in USA Today, which notes that “about 7,000 people have taken classes at Oaksterdam” campuses in three California cities — L.A., Oakland and Sebastopol, Calif.

The school, which now has a waiting list for admission, is the brainchild of Richard Lee, proprietor of Oakland's Blue Sky coffee shop and the main backer behind a proposed state initiative to fully legalize marijuana.

“It's been amazing, the response,” Lee told USA Today. “People come in from all over the country.”
