A motorist repeatedly rammed a random car he was following on the streets of Silver Lake and Echo Park before stepping out with a shotgun in-hand, police allege.

Luckily for the victims, the gun, and another firearm the suspect allegedly had inside the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup he was driving, were unloaded, officials at the Los Angeles Police Department told us.

Still, it must have been a nightmarish scenario for two people inside a Mini Countryman early this morning.

]

It started shortly after midnight at Sunset Boulevard and Hyperion Avenue when the truck rammed the moving Countryman, said LAPD Lt. Thomas Mason.

At first the driver of the Mini wanted to pull over to exchange information, the lieutenant said, but the passenger said something like, I don't think it was an accident, at which point the car was struck again.

The truck rammed the car “several more times” as the motorist in the Mini attempted get away via area streets, Mason said.

The pair inside the Countryman headed south to a gas station at or near the crossing of Temple Street and Beverly Boulevard, he said. (There's a station at Virgil Street and Beverly Boulevard).

The suspect followed, stopped and stepped out with the shotgun, Mason said:

They [the two victims] got to the gas station and they ran from their car. The suspect jumped out with an unloaded shotgun and was waiving it about.

By then officers were well on their way and when they arrived the man, shotgun in hand, put it down and surrendered, according to the lieutenant.

The suspect, booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon—in this case that would allegedly be his truck—was identified as Kenneth Giese, a 49-year-old from Whittier, police said.

It's not clear what set him off, but Officer Drake Madison said it's “possible” the suspect was suffering from mental issues.

No injuries were reported, but that Mini got smashed up pretty good.
