Efforts to “save the peak” near the historic Hollywood sign have one day and $3 million to go to purchase the land for public use, the Trust for Public Land states.

The group has raised more than $9 million toward the $12 million purchase price of the 138-acre swath of land on a ridge line that runs near the Hollywood sign. The deadline for purchasing the land from a private developer is noon Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the group was looking at a $3 million funding gap three weeks ago and hasn't apparently made much progress since then. A Trust for Public Land leader told Patt Morrison on KPCC (89.9 FM) Tuesday that $2.9 million was the magic number.

Celebrities such as Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have already given to the effort. You can donate here.
