Woman Killed, Officer Injured on Subsequent Collision Near Shields Avenue

FRESNO, CA (August 15, 2023) – Police arrested Santos Coronel after two separate crashes early Monday morning on Clovis Avenue that left a woman dead and an officer injured. Officers responded to the first incident around 11:50 a.m. on Clovis and Shields Avenue in the city of Fresno. Upon arrival, authorities located a female suffering fatal injuries after getting hit by a male driver. Tragically, the woman died at the scene. However, her identity remains undisclosed to the public, pending notification from the next of kin. Police said the male driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigators. While officers provided traffic control in the area, another vehicle traveling south on Clovis near Garland Avenue crashed into a police car. The collision caused the patrol vehicle to spin and hit an officer, leaving the officer with moderate injuries. In the end, authorities arrested the second driver – 28-year-old Santos Coronel – for driving under the influence. Police said Coronel has a previous record of DUI arrest and driving with a suspended license.
