A Santa Monica police officer was recovering in a hospital Tuesday after he was shot by a suspect during an early morning traffic stop near Lincoln Boulevard and Bay Street, police said.

The passenger of a vehicle pulled over for a DUI investigation allegedly opened fire on the officer about 1:30 a.m., said Santa Monica police Sgt. Jay Trisler. The suspect apparently fled nearby before being located about four hours later and again engaging police with gunfire.

A SWAT team responded and the gunman was shot and wounded. He apparently survived, but his condition was not known.

The driver of the vehicle was booked on suspicion of DUI.
