A man was killed by police in Santa Monica Friday night in a rare pair of shootings in the coastal, Westside city.

According to reports it started about 6:15 p.m. when the suspect opened fire on a woman on Santa Monica Boulevard and Sixth Seventh Street across the street from the main branch of the city's public library. Fox 11 News reported that responding officers spotted the man on nearby Ninth Street and Broadway and opened fire when he allegedly aimed his weapon at them, fatally wounding him.

A witness told the station that the pair was a couple and might have been breaking up or estranged — “soon to be separated,” she called them — when the first shooting happened.

The woman was said to be in critical condition at an area hospital.
