A 49-year-old San Pedro woman allegedly killed her 10-year-old daughter and then turned the weapon she had used, apparently a knife, on herself early Friday, police said. The mother survived.

The suspect, whose name has not been revealed, is a retired Navy reservist's wife who lives on the Fort MacArthur military base. Authorities were called to the residence shortly before 2:30 a.m. and found both mother and daughter critically wounded from knife wounds, said Bruce Borihanh of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The girl died a few hours later at a hospital, while the woman remains hospitalized, Borihanh said.

The LAPD's Abused Child unit took charge of the investigation.
