Be gone, miserable graveyard of cinema that is January, when the studios are notorious for dumping sub-par product while everyone plays with their Christmas toys and spends any movie-going time catching up with the Oscar bait that came out last month. Dimension Films is gambling on busting this stereotype with indie comedy Youth In Revolt, the latest from The Good Girl helmer Miguel Arteta which features boy wonder Michael Cera as a hapless dweeb hoping to score with the girl of his dreams by inventing a mustachioed chain-smoking alter ego who eggs him on to greatness. It's a little like Rushmore meets Fight Club, and if the audience reception at 2010's inaugural Cinema Tuesdays – curated by Flux at the Ricardo Montalban Theater in Hollywood – is anything to go by, the plan might just work like gangbusters.

Snatching up the free popcorn, candy, Red Bull and other provisions before the show, the audience crowded into the Montalban as the doors opened, broke into peals of laughter as the film rolled and pretty much never let up. Arteta's comedy also boasts a cast to die for (Buscemi! Liotta! Long! Smart! Galifianakis!) and killer soundtrack heavy on mid-century French pop, a theme which loomed large at the afterparty in the theater's upstairs mezzanine with Paris Loves L.A., featuring Gallic songstress Adele Jacques (who also features on the soundtrack) churning out a delicious set heavy on Serge Gainsbourg covers. Also delicious were the signature cocktails supplied by Belvedere Vodka; delicious in a whole different, dangerous way. A filmgoer apparently so inspired to misbehave by Cera's alter-ego character, Francois Dillinger, climbed right out the window onto the second-floor ledge above Vine Street to grab a smoke. Security pulled him in and whisked him out so fast, we didn't even get a chance to cheer.
