At least 25 people were injured when a United Airlines flight from Washington, D.C. to LAX hit turbulence and reportedly dropped precipitously. According to televised reports passengers said that some aboard the wide-body jet literally hit the roof when the plane hit rough air over Kansas.

“There were storms in the area,” United spokeswoman Jean Medina told Reuters.

Flight 967 was diverted to Denver, where it landed at 7 p.m. and injured passengers subsequently received medical treatment. The Boeing 777 carried 255 passengers and 10 crew members, according to Reuters.
