Funny things happen when you cross a couple of state lines. The temperature drops, the Scoville Index climbs, and if you're lucky, an alien beer arrives table side (and no, this isn't another X-Files sequel). Welcome to New Mexico.

Rich Weber of New Mexico's Sierra Blanca Brewing Company first brewed Roswell Alien Amber Ale in 1997 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the purported UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico. The red ale is now brewed in the small town of Moriarty along with a full lineup of brews (when the Alien Ale was first brewed, Sierra Blanca was located in Carrizozo, New Mexico, about 70 miles east of Roswell).

The Alien Ale, which Squid Ink found to be a solid red ale on a recent tasting in Santa Fe (albeit nothing particularly extraterrestrial), can be difficult to find beyond state lines. Not to worry. If you don't have a trip to New Mexico planned in the near future, you can always channel your inner alien.
