54-Year-Old Truck Driver Dies in Single-Vehicle Rollover Accident near Kolb Road

TUCSON, AZ (February 27, 2023) – Tuesday afternoon, Rick Immel was killed in a single-vehicle rollover truck crash on Interstate 10.

The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m., between Kolb and Rita Road.

Investigators say a truck driven by 54-year-old Immel was hauling nitric acid headed to Theodore, Alabama for the Landstar System, Inc.

Officers believe that Immel may have suffered medical issues before the incident. The driver then veered into the center median and the truck overturned causing the shell to crack open and spill volatile chemicals into the air.

Medical personnel arrived and pronounced 54-year-old Immel, of Nevada dead at the scene. In addition, a service dog that was with him at the time will be returned to his family.

Over 40,000 pounds of liquid nitric acid spilled from the vehicle. Residents within a half mile were ordered to evacuate, while those within a mile were ordered to shelter in place.
