Man Thrown from Wheelchair, Killed in Collision on Industrial Way

COSTA MESA, CA (January 28, 2022) – A hit-and-run crash on Newport Boulevard claimed the life of Richard Smith Thursday night.

Officers responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m., between Newport Boulevard and Industrial Way.

Per police records, the driver of a 2009-2010 black Toyota Highlander struck the male the pedestrian and immediately fled the scene. 50-year-old Smith, of Newport Beach succumbed to his injuries at the hospital after sustaining significant injuries.

Meanwhile, police are asking anyone who can identify the driver of a 2009-2010 black Toyota Highlander. Investigators claimed that the suspect’s vehicle received front-end damage after the collision.
