Nan Kohler of Grist & Toll and baker Michael O'Malley kick off the Grist & Toll Baking Series with a class that covers the fundamentals of baking bread with freshly milled, whole-grain flour. Participants will leave with baked bread and a whole-grain starter kit (active starter, flour, a banneton and other bread baking tools). The day includes a light lunch and a milling demonstration. Cafe Pierre Farewell Dinner
After 37 years, Cafe Pierre will say farewell to Manhattan Beach (with plans to reopen this summer as a new restaurant, Love and Salt). The owners are commemorating their final week of service with a throwback menu, offering dishes they served throughout the years. The four-course, prix fixe menu will be available from April 6 through April 13. Dishes include escargot with garlic butter and pâté maison; cream of mushroom soup with sherry; crêpes cordon bleu; filet Dijonnaise; and frog legs, with crème caramel and flourless chocolate cake for dessert. A celebratory glass of prosecco will be included with the menu, and suggested wine pairings will be available.
