It's the season of chile roasts, even if you don't live in New Mexico, and if you didn't make it to Sante Fe you can head on over to the Santa Monica farmers market, where they're having southwest-style chile roasts every Saturday for the month of September at the Saturday Pico market.
Chile roasts will start at 9 a.m. and go until 1 p.m. -- which is the duration of the market -- or until the chiles, which will sell for $2 a pound, are gone.
Santa Monica farmers market manager Laura Avery says that she's going to do a test run this Saturday ("to see if the roaster works"), so you might want to swing by this weekend too.
The chiles go into the huge roaster that Avery brought back from Santa Fe a few years ago, and two or three batches are generally roasted each Saturday.

This Saturday they'll be starting with Anaheims and jalapeños from Tutti Frutti Farms in Lompoc, and then they'll be roasting whatever is in season, most likely including poblanos. Roasted chiles freeze very well, so if you pick up more than you need, just toss them into the freezer for later use. (It's never too early to start planning for the Super Bowl, is it.)
