Just in time for our next heatwave - triple-digit temperatures forecast again in the valleys, woo-hoo - comes news of a new ice cream shop. And not just any ice cream shop, but Portland, Oregon's famous Salt & Straw. If this sounds familiar to people who don't spend much time in Oregon's arguably best city, maybe it's because you spend a lot of time at Joan's on Third, where the lines for the Salt & Straw counter are about as long as the lines for, well, everything else.
Kim and Tyler Malek, the cousins who launched Salt & Straw in Portland, today announced that they're opening their first L.A. shop, in Larchmont Village in August. This will be the first shop outside of Portland, so you can all feel happily city-proud. And yes, it'll be insanely hot then, too. In the meantime, you can hang out at Joan McNamara's nicely air-conditioned shop and eat your scoops and dream.
And before August, just to make you feel better, Salt & Straw will be driving a new ice cream truck around town, where you'll be able to get flavors such as sea salt with caramel ribbons, almond brittle with salted ganache, freckled woodblock chocolate, chocolate with gooey brownie and double fold vanilla.

When Salt & Straw gets to town, they'll also be continuing the kind of locavore stuff they've been known for up north, sourcing ingredients here and making their ice cream on site instead of trucking it in from Portlandia. Local purveyors with whom the Maleks will be working include Santa Ynez Valley walnut oil, Compartes' Love Nuts, Ojai olive oil and Stumptown coffee.
If the Portland model is anything to go by, we can likely expect scoops of handmade, small-batch ice creams, sundaes, milkshakes and floats, as well as pints to-go. Awesome. It would be awesome anyway, but particularly this summer, which is looking to be a scorcher.
