After leading police on a high speed chase that included several freeways, an alleged car thief crashed the getaway machine and hid in a bush, according to police.

The story begins at 12:30 this morning when the unidentified man passed Los Angeles General Services police officers — they guard city properties, including City Hall — in a reported stolen car at close to 100 mph on the 110.

The driver then covered a lot of ground with a tour of L.A. freeways, including the 10, the 5, the 710 and finally the eastbound 60.

The man in the car crashed into another vehicle and then into a tree on the Findlay Avenue off-ramp from the eastbound 60, and the car caught fire, according to the California Highway Patrol. The chase ended at 12:49.

The man got out of the car and crawled into a sizable bush. Once they'd surrounded said bush, police asked firefighters to trim the brush. Hopefully it needed a trimming anyway.

The man was taken into custody and sent to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, Newsreel reported.

A General Services watch commander said he had no new information this a.m.
