A Southern California-based Reddit user recently said he killed his sister's abusive boyfriend and got away with it because he employed a drug, meth, that the victim was already hooked on.

The big question is whether this was just a hoax. The user, Naratto, followed up by saying, there's “SOME truth behind it.” Now San Diego police want to know for sure:

Lt. Kevin Mayer tells the Weekly today that, in response to news coverage of the apparent admission, the San Diego Police Department's cold-case unit has opened a new file on the matter:

We're aware of it now and are looking into it now. If they find any foul play it would be moved back into homicide unit.

Naratto used a Reddit community meme, the “confession bear,” to say:

My sister had an abusive meth-addict boyfriend. I killed him with his own drugs while he was unconscious and they ruled it as an overdose.

The user followed up by saying:

There is SOME truth behind it, but I'm not saying what was true and what wasn't. Sure you can find information about ME, but linking me to something that happened is completely different.

Meanwhile the Reddit community went to work in an attempt to unmask the user and came up with a 24-year-old sometime San Diegan, Colton Goodbrand, whose mother owned a marijuana dispensary.

A woman claiming to be Goodbrand's sister apparently says the whole thing was “an ill-advised prank.”

It looks like the San Diego PD will have the last word on that.

“Whether he's credible or not, it's still preliminary right now,” Mayer says.
