Rebecca Weiss, a 50-year-old businesswoman from Marina Del Rey, left to go freediving in Rancho Palos Verdes on Saturday morning, says her husband Alan — and never came home.

According to reports, the couple often goes diving off the Palos Verdes Peninsula at Terranea, a luxury oceanfront resort.

Alan Weiss tells LA Weekly that his wife was “freediving off of Palos Verdes” when she disappeared…

… and adds that she is “very experienced.”

City News Service reports that the missing woman was supposed to return to her home on Marina Pointe Drive by around 5 p.m. But when she didn't show up, “her husband went to the area where they frequently go diving and found some of her personal items.” CBS LA says he also “found her car parked near a beach entryway of the Terranea Resort.”

Sheriff's deputies and a dive team have been searching for Weiss, a small Asian woman, all through yesterday and today. When we talked to her husband at about 3:15 p.m., she still hadn't been located.

Weiss was reportedly wearing a wet suit and driving a black 2006 BMW X5 when she left home on Saturday.

Internet listings show that the missing Westside resident and her husband run several businesses, including Alan L. Weiss Inc. and Specialty Grocery Inc., out of their home in Marina Del Rey.

Anyone with any information about the woman's whereabouts is urged to call Sheriff's Lieutenant Michael Rodriguez at (323) 890-5500.

Update: The Terrenea resort opened just a few years ago, in June 2009. Although the hotel offers chaperoned scuba-diving tours, the rocky beach below still has open access and appears to be a favorite of freelance divers.

A review of the colorful spot on California Diving News warns divers about the dangers of entry and exit:

The two main entry points, Long Point and Marineland Cove require experience, skill and some luck entering over the slippery boulders and constantly changing cobble beach. A favorite entry point can be washed away with the next high tide. Watch the sets of waves. Small steps are required to enter and exit the water to avoid falls.
