Ready-to-Eat Popcorn Recalled Due to Listeria

Popcorn manufacturer Popcorn, Indiana has issued a voluntary recall of several ready-to-eat bags of popcorn due to possible contamination with that very nasty bacteria Listeria, Fox News reports.

According to the company's product recall site, bags that were distributed “to various retailers” and sold over the Internet on or after Aug. 8, 2012 with “Best By” dates between Feb. 4, 2013, and March 12th, 2013, should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement. The bags are colored red and came in various sizes.

A full list of the recalled popcorn can be found on the company's website. The recalled flavors include everything from basic caramel corn to Aged White Cheddar, American Cheese, Almond Biscotti, Bacon Ranch, Black & White Drizzle, Dark Fudge Chocolate Chip Drizzle — and yes, even the Wasabi Reserve.

Apart from the recalled bags, Popcorn, Indiana maintains that the rest of its products are safe for consumption.

“Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of those who buy our popcorn and the employees who make up our company,” it said in a statement. “We hold ourselves to standards that are among the highest in the industry, and as such, we regularly conduct testing beyond FDA requirements. We have never had a recall in our company history, and we are working to ensure this is our last.”

(An aside: the rest of the company website was written by a very annoying, probably geriatric would-be hipster whose prose might make you more ill than the Listeria: “What should we tell you about ourselves? You've probably got some wild online searching or mad social networking to do, so we'll just keep this simple, short, and sweet. That's how we roll. We are wildly fanatical about healthier, whole grain snacking. Our mission is to make the best tasting better-for-you snacks on the planet….We have special kettles that are filled, by hand, one scoop at a time, by real people, who are carefully producing, oh-so-lovingly, the greatest popcorn you've ever had. That sentence had a lot of commas, so you know we're serious.” Barf.)
