Quick, what's the difference between a Depeche Mode convention and a leather daddy convention? The music at the Depeche Mode convention is more depressing! Kidding, of course, but picturing the guests who will surely be heading over to Avalon on Sunday for the 2013 Depeche Mode Convention, one can imagine that there will be lots of black, lots of leather and plenty of exposed chests dancing all night to electro-industrial power tracks composed by the group Rolling Stone calls “the quintessential '80s techno-pop band.” New Wave DJ Richard Blade will host the evening, planned as a festive celebration of the band's entire career, spanning from 1980 to the present (their most recent release was just this year, 2013's Delta Machine). Strangelove: The Ultimate Tribute to Depeche Mode will perform live, and superfans can gorge themselves on the banquet of collectibles, rare videos, contests and prize giveaways filling the halls of the classic Hollywood palace. Conventions also can be a good place to meet like-minded darkly adorned singles. At Avalon on Sunday, you might find your own personal Jesus. Someone who's there. Someone who cares… Avalon, 1735 N. Vine St., Hlywd.; Sun., Aug. 11, 7 p.m.-2 a.m.; $20 advance tickets, $25 at the door. (323) 462-8900, avalonhollywood.com.
